Spot power prices on the Polish Power Exchange (TGE) recorded hefty losses in week 7 thanks to increased wind production and the end of the cold snap. Day-ahead prices fell 11% week on week to Zloty 277.47/ MWh (Eur 61.85/MWh) on Feb. 18 boosted by forecast wind generation up to 4 GW on Feb. 19 following a week of light conditions. The recent cold snap came to an end with average air temperatures in Warsaw rising above the seasonal norm on Feb. 19 following more than a week of wintry weather and heavy snowfall. The cold snap, with temperatures in the Tatra mountains in southern Poland falling to minus 25 degrees Celsius, saw record power demand on Feb. 12 with consumption reaching 27,617 MW, TSO PSE said. Demand was met mostly by domestic generation with net imports contributing just 900 MW. Demand in January rose 2.16% year on year due mostly to the lower temperatures. PSE ramped up hard coal-fired generation by 10 percentage points YoY to compensate for reduced wind output. Near curve prices on TGE rose 0.4% week on week with the March contract reaching Zloty 256.93/MWh on Feb. 18. Far curve prices rose 0.8% week on week with the Cal-22 contract ending Feb. 18 at Zloty 278.99/MWh. Lower prices in some of Poland’s neighboring markets saw Poland mainly export power to Lithuania, a reversal of the norm. The average price of green certificates, used to support existing renewable energy installations, rose 0.7% week on week to Zloty 142.90/MWh on Feb. 18.
