The Europe-delivered CIF ARA thermal coal spot market fell heavily in the two weeks to March 9, with sources noting persistently bearish supply/demand fundamentals. On March 9 S&P Global Platts assessed the price of CIF ARA physical thermal coal basis 6,000 kcal/kg NAR and for delivery within the next 15-60 day period at $75/mt, down from $83.50/mt February 23. The material had been assessed at $93.50 January 12. A May 50,000 mt DES Amsterdam-Rotterdam multi-origin parcel with US optionality traded via globalCOAL at $72.25/mt March 9. April DES AR multi-origin bids with US optionality were at $74/mt against similar offers at $77/mt. There was no pricing information for March-delivery cargoes. A Switzerland-based trader noted that the market was better supplied than earlier in the year. There was "suddenly a lot of people" with spot coal to sell," he said, noting one European utility was "happy to swap cargoes." Sources continued to note lower demand as temperatures improved. "People are still relatively well-stocked and with the backwardation issue, selling interest is always there for the balance of the month," but offers were poor, one said. The market traded March 9 for the first time since March 1, with the deal only the ninth reported fixed price DES ARA trade for the year to date. In the South African floating price market, a 50,000 mt April-loading parcel traded via globalCOAL at a 30-cent premium to a FOB Richards Bay index.
