AES needs to persuade Northern Ireland of the merits of battery-based storage and so prompt reform of the region’s capacity and ancillary markets, Mark Miller, Vice President, AES UK and Ireland Markets told Platts June 18. The US independent power producer has 174-MW of battery storage in operation in the US and Chile. In April it announced plans for a 100-MW battery array at its Kilroot power station site, north of Belfast. “AES is the largest provider of grid battery array systems in the world,” Miller said. “In all the markets in which we’re active we’ve worked with the system operator to help capture the benefit of storage for ancillary services and grid security. This is what we are facing in Northern Ireland right now.”
