A combination of low power prices and high output made 2012 the weakest year in a decade for Norway's electricity supply industry, according to a recently-published survey by Norwegian brokers Pareto. Many leading regional utilities made losses last year and are now facing the need to shed staff and cut costs. Meanwhile production for the year at 146 TWh was a record. The long-term outlook for power utilities seemed unlikely to improve, Energi Norge spokesman Eivind Heloee said: "Power prices look set to remain stable going forward. That means weaker margins and pressure on prices... Structural changes in the industry have made some utilities prepare for mergers."
