Spot European-delivered CIF ARA thermal coal prices broke out of their downward trend in July on the back of short-covering and some concerns about the outbreak of a major supply disruption in Colombia, although by the end of the month most traders had come to the conclusion that as yet its only effect would be to rebalance an oversupplied market rather than cause tightness. On July 26, Platts assessed the CIF ARA 15-60 day price at $77.55/mt, up from $73/mt at the end of June. By August 1, the assessment had softened to $76/mt (Aug 2, 2012: $93.75/mt). Mine and port workers at the Colombian operations of US coal producer Drummond began industrial action in July over a wage and benefits dispute. Sources said the strike would cut Atlantic supply by around 500,000 mt/week while it continued, with a high proportion destined for northwest Europe. Into August, however, traders were talking of a "massive change in sentiment" as large amounts of South African coal nullified the effects of the Colombian strike.
