Power cuts throughout the island of Cyprus were continuing July 22 following extensive damage to the 648-MW Vasilikos power station on July 11. The plant was largely destroyed by a massive explosion of confiscated ordinance at the Evaggelos Florakis naval base early in the morning of July 11, an accident that has claimed 13 lives. Rolling blackouts are being carried out by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus as it awaits arrival of further generator units to help replace output from Vasilikos, normally responsible for half the island's power. "The EAC announces that coordinated efforts are being made with the Transmission System Operator so that all premises affected by power cuts experience them only once every 24 hours for a duration of no longer than 2 hours and 30 minutes," it said July 20. The utility has repeatedly called on Cypriots to turn off air conditioning units and conserve energy during peak periods. Use of washing machines, dryers and other power-intensive domestic equipment should only take place after 2200 hours, it said.
