Germany's electricity system will require a new market design to handle more than 35% renewables by 2020 and 80% by 2050, sector experts said on July 12. "We don't want a long-term planned economy for electricity nor a system that is selectively controlled, but rather one in which rules are set proactively with a view to strengthening competition," said Matthias Kurth, president of sector regulator Bundesnetzagentur at a workshop organized by the BNA and Franco-German electricity exchange EPEX Spot. "We need to develop a market design for the future, a central European answer rather than a national solution, involving a transparent trading system," said Iris Weidinger, chairman of the board of EPEX Spot.
