RWE has agreed to sell a 74.9% stake in its Amprion high voltage network company for around €1 billion, the company said July 14. The buyer is a consortium of mainly German insurance companies and pension funds and managed by Commerz Real. RWE is to retain a 25.1% shareholding in Amprion, Germany's largest transmission system operator with around 11,000 km of high-voltage power lines. "Network expansion requires very high levels of investment and we are spreading this burden," RWE CEO Juergen Grossmann said. "Amprion plans to invest over €3 billion over the next 10 years. In the investor consortium, we have gained a reliable, financially sound partner with a long-term strategy. RWE will continue to provide competent and reliable support to Amprion's transmission systems business."
