The Spanish electricity sector is experiencing an increase in customer switching, according to the latest CNE national energy commission report on the retail market. In 2010, some 414,500 clients requested a change of trader, more than four times the 89,600 in 2009. CNE sources say the quantity of consumers who will change electricity supplier this year will exceed 500,000. Two reasons explain the phenomenon - electricity market liberalization, and the economic crisis. Even though clients have been able to leave the regulated sector since 2000, last year was the first complete fiscal year since the introduction of full liberalization in July 2009. From that moment, every client with a contract of 10 kilowatts or more was excluded from the only remaining regulated tariff, known as the last-resort tariff (TUR).
