Drax Power is seeking Renewables Obligation support for the UK's first coal-to-biomass conversion project, chief executive Dorothy Thompson told Platts on June 30.rnAt a briefing in the House of Commons, Thompson said the independent generator was in talks with the Department of Energy and Climate Change on possible support for the 100% conversion of one its 660-MW coal-fired units to biomass.rn"This is not a demonstration in the sense of a carbon capture and storage demonstration," Thompson said. "The cost is much less and we are not looking for a capital grant. We are exploring the possibility of support under the Renewables Obligation for demonstration. Beyond demonstration we are looking for a new band that would need to be somewhere between the current biomass co-firing band of 0.5 ROCs/MWh and the dedicated biomass band of 1.5 ROCs/MWh."
