Channeling earnings from CO2 auctioning to subsidize construction of new power stations is "totally unacceptable," says Germany's industrial power users lobby VIK, commenting on arrangements in the European Council's energy and climate change package, agreed in December.rn"Politicians first take the money away from the powerful energy suppliers, then generously give a part back for new power stations even though the energy companies already refinance their costs from electricity customers through rising electricity prices. In view of the energy companies' high profits these subsidies call forth pure windfall effects and will strengthen the current oligopoly at generator level," the VIK said. The package allows grants of up to 15% of the investment costs in new power stations (assuming there are built carbon capture ready) from auction earnings over the period 2013-2016.
