Iberdrola has signed agreements with five Portuguese universities to collaborate in research and technical studies for the development of the 1,134 MW Alto Tamega hydro project in Portugal. The studies will focus on efficiency optimization, assessing the environmental impact and analyzing the economic and social effects of the project. Iberdrola was awarded a 65-year concession to build and operate the four hydro-electric dams in the Douro river basin in northern Portugal and is expected to invest €1.7 billion in the project. In May, it applied for €750 million in financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB).
