Illiquidity saw record coal prices stagnate in early April. A May delivery Richards Bay cargo attracted a bid of $99.50/metric ton off-screen in the over-the-counter market and there was a brief offer at $102/mt for the same month. GlobalCOAL's FOB Richards Bay contract had a best bid of $100/mt for May that went without any corresponding offer. There was an on-screen offer at $101.75/mt for a June Richards Bay cargo, but no bid. Spreads continued to narrow for the trading platform's DES ARA contract in June which was bid at $124.50/mt against an offer of $132/mt, a spread of $7.50/mt. On March 31, globalCOAL's DES ARA contract in June had a bid-offer spread of $129-$140/mt - $ll/mt. Platts assessed the prompt month May CIF ARA price at $128.25/mt, up 25 cents, and FOB Richards Bay at $100.75/mt, up 25 cents.
