UK engineering company Sheffield Forgemasters International is moving ahead with plans to seek financing for a 15,000-metric-ton press that could start to produce ultra-large forgings for the nuclear industry within three years, according to a company executive. The massive press would be installed at SFI's 64-acre Brightside Lane manufacturing site in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. The equipment would put SFI in direct competition with Japan Steel Works, the developed world's monopoly supplier of ultra-large forgings, requiring ingots of 350 metric tons to 600 mt. SFI group director Peter Birtles said: "If we were to place an order with our currently preferred supplier today, the press could be working in October 2010." He said SFI had set a deadline of the end of May to decide the best way to fund the project.
