The cost of coal delivered into northwest European ports continued to fall in the two weeks to August 6, when Platts assessed the prompt month September CIF ARA coal price at $184/metric and FOB Richards Bay at $149/mt. On July 24 September CIF ARA had been assessed at $194/mt, while FOB Richards Bay stood at $146/mt. Market sources pointed to a decline in forward freight costs. Atlantic physical coal prices were stable in trading August 6, with slightly more trading interest than in previous days. A DES October 50,000 metric ton parcel was paid at a $2.85/mt premium to CIF ARA index, API2, on the globalCOAL trading screen. On the API2, the Cal-09 contract traded down to an intraday low of $172/mt August 6, before peaking at $175.80/mt.
