Vattenfall Europe is seeking a buyer for its German high voltage transmission network in a decision driven, it says, by the months of political debate over ownership unbundling. If it comes to a sale, "this should be completed in the first half of 2009," the company said July 30.rnVattenfall follows E.ON as the second of Germany's four network owners to begin the sale process for its high voltage network. Unlike E.ON, however, Vattenfall's divestment plan was not initiated in response to a threatening cartel case. E.ON's plans to sell its high voltage network, along with 4,800-MW of power station capacity, were proposed as part of a deal in which the European Commission drops antitrust cases against E.ON and the potentially substantial fines that might have been the outcome of those cases (PiE 531/1).
