Trianel European Energy Trading and 12 German municipal utilities announced in mid-June that they intend to set up a project company to develop a gas-fired power station comprising one or two 400MW units. At the same time, Trianel is investigating the alternative option of participation in an existing gas-fired power project such as Concord Power's 1.200MW Lubmin project or Intergen's 800MW project in Huerth. Trianel hopes to take a decision on construction in the first quarter of 2005 and, assuming the decision is positive, to have a power station commissioned in 2007 in time to benefit from Germany's five-year tax break on gas use for power generation. Since the project's investors will also buy the electricity produced, project financing "should be easier". Trianel itself "needs a leg in power supply" because margins in the pure distribution and marketing business are too small, but in generation are "relatively high."
