Gas-fired generation will clearly beat coal in the economic provision of balancing and reserve power for Germany's growing wind energy sector, according to a study by the Bremer Energie Institut of Bremen. The effect is even more marked where back-up is provided for offshore wind, says author Juergen Gabriel. To 2020, around 20GW of wind capacity is slated for German offshore construction, largely in the North Sea. During the same period, almost all conventional power station capacity in the north-west coastal region will be pensioned off (assuming a lifetime of 40 years - see table one) and operators must decide on the fuel for replacement plant.
