Reinstating a nationwide speed limit of 55 miles per hour would likely reduce oil consumption by about 1% annually, but factors such as traffic congestion and driver behavior could sway the results, the Government Accountability Office said last week. GAO, the investigative arm of Congress, found that while driving slower would increase motor vehicle fuel economy, other variables - such as driver behavior, road conditions and weather - would impact how much gasoline would actually be saved. "The speed limit is only one tool among many for potentially conserving fuel," GAO said in a report Monday.
