Analyses by IHS Markit and Wood Mackenzie indicate gas generation additions in 2018 are likely to exceed the combined nameplate capacity additions of solar and wind for the first time since 2013, but industry observers differ over whether this trend will continue in 2019. Copies of the IHS Markit and Wood Mackenzie reports, cited in a PV Magazine article Friday, could not be obtained in time for publication, but the US Energy Information Administration’s latest generation capacity report, which covers the period through September, indicates natural gas generation additions in 2018 are expected to top 22 GW.
