A competitive auction for three offshore wind lease areas off the coast of Massachusetts wrapped up Friday with winning bids totaling $405 million from Equinor, Vineyard Wind and Mayflower Wind Energy, a Royal Dutch Shell and EDP Renewables joint venture. The auction was conducted by the US Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. A total of 11 companies participated in the auction and the winning bids “far exceed” the previous record bid for a single lease area, set by a $42.5 million bid from Equinor, formerly Statoil, in a 2016 New York lease auction, according to a statement from trade group American Wind Energy Association.
