Southern Power, Southern Company's merchant unit, has abandoned plans for a large, natural gas-fired combined-cycle power plant in southern Virginia, citing "current market conditions" as incompatible with Southern's business model. In a December letter to the Danville-Pittsylvania Regional Industrial Facility Authority, Elizabeth Wash, Southern's state and local affairs manager, said her company would not renew a purchase and sale agreement option for 300 acres of land at the Berry Hill Industrial Park, which had been signed in June 2016. The Danville (Virginia) Register and Bee first reported the proposal's termination on Monday.
