Coal and oil generation in the New York Independent System Operator footprint plunged 91.3% month on month in February as the region had less heating demand following a frigid start to the year, according to grid operator data. Coal and oil generation averaged 847 MWh/d in February, down 56.6% year on year, which pushed coal and oil to fall from 2% of the NYISO fuel mix in January to 0.23% in February. Likewise, dual fuel generation averaged 45,098 MWh/d, 46.5% lower than in January and 20.8% below last February. Dual fuel plants accounted for 13.6% of the NYISO fuel mix in February, a drop of 7.3 percentage points month on month and 3.6 percentage points year on year.
