After further delaying and all but killing the building of a 262 MW gasfired peaker, the state of California is giving life to the idea that it may never allow another gas-fired facility to be built in the state. The recent decision by the California Energy Commission to grant NRG Energy’s request to delay until May 1, 2018, any final judgment on its $299 million proposed gas-fired Puente facility was challenged by intervenors in the case who wanted the CEC to finalize a decision to deny the project now, rather than later. The state, in conjuction with would-be investors, must also decide on an alternative. At some point in the next six months the CEC is expected to run a preferred resource request for offers that NRG has said it will likely participate in to see if it can “bring some value.”
