Michigan's attorney general is urging state regulators to stop Consumers Energy from recovering millions of dollars in power supply costs, claiming the utility's improper handling of its coal inventory led to unnecessary generation curtailments in 2014. Had the CMS Energy subsidiary brought in only an additional 251,000 short tons of Western coal in 2013, less than 3% of its coal requirements for that year, it could have entered 2014 with enough on-site fuel to avoid curtailments of 825,000 MWh "at some of its coal plants on multiple days during the winter, summer and fall months of 2014 in order to avoid a complete shutdown of those plants due to insufficient coal stocks at those plants," John Janiszewski, an assistant attorney general, told the Michigan Public Service Commission in a regulatory filing.
