US zinc recycler and producer HorseheadnHolding saw losses narrow to $1.7 millionnfrom $3.7 million in the second quarternof 2012, despite lower zinc prices, thencompany said Monday. However, excludingnnon-cash charges associated with hedgesnand lower-of-cost-or-market inventorynadjustments, consolidated Q2 net earningsnwere $1.5 million, down from $5.5 millionnon the same basis in Q2 2011. Net sales,nexcluding $2.5 million related to non-cashnhedge charges, rose by 9% to $120 millionnin Q2 2011 from $110.3 million in Q2n2011, the company said. London MetalnExchange zinc prices were 14% lower, averagingn87 cents/lb in Q2 2012 comparednwith $1.02/lb in Q2 2011, Horsehead saidnin its earnings statement. “When the noncashnimpact of hedge write-offs, mark-tomarketnadjustments and LCM charges areneliminated, our operating results were positivendespite much lower commodity pricesncompared with the prior year,” said JimnHensler, president and CEO of Horsehead.nZinc product shipments in Q2 2012, whichnincluded a full quarter from its Zochemnoperation, rose by 29% to 48,572 st fromn37,689 st a year earlier. Electric-arc furnacendust receipts rose 17% to an annualizednrate of 647,000 st and dust processednincreased 11%, the company said.
