Merafe Resources said late Friday it hasnsettled its European benchmark price for ferrochromenwith customers at $1.25/lb for thenthird quarter, down 7% from $1.35/lb in Q2.nThe decrease comes amid weaker demandnfrom stainless steel mills and uncertain economicnconditions. Through its wholly ownednsubsidiary Merafe Ferrochrome & Mining, thencompany has a 20.5% stake in the Xstrata-nMerafe Chrome Venture in South Africa, thenworld’s largest ferrochrome producer. Merafensaid it expects to operate only eight out of itsn20 ferrochrome furnaces for the winter monthsnof June, July and August. Most South Africannferrochrome producers lower production in thenwinter months due to seasonally high powerntariffs. Merafe said its ferrochrome productionnfor the winter months will be around 40-50%nof installed capacity.
