Zambia produced 68,649 mt of coppernin May, down 8.4% from 75,025 mt producednin May 2011 due to lower copperncontent in ore, the Bank of Zambiansaid in data released Monday. Coppernoutput in the month was also 4.8%nlower than April’s production of 72,116nmt. In the first five months of the yearnthe country produced 359,861 mt ofncopper, down 7.6% compared with thensame period of 2011, the bank said.n“Production has not been very goodnthis year,” said Bank of Zambia officialnIvan Zyuulu. Copper content in areasnbeing mined is very low compared withnlast year, he said. Exports of coppernin May, however, were higher, up 8.8%nyear on year at 74,845 mt from 68,769nmt in May 2011. The country’s exportsnin the first five months of the yearnincreased by 71.4% to 348,240 mt, upnfrom 203,068 mt in the same period ofn2011. “This was due to high prices onnthe international market,” Zyuulu said.nZambia expects to produce 900,000nmt of copper in 2012, according tonMinister of Mines, Energy and WaternDevelopment Christopher Yaluma.
