The European Commission’s competitionnauthorities have set a provisionalndeadline of November 8 to rule on thenproposed merger between commoditiesntrader and producer Glencore and diversifiednminer Xstrata, according to a noticenon the EC’s website. The EC was notifiednof the proposed merger on Tuesday, thennotice said. The two Switzerland-basedncompanies announced Monday that theynhad reached an agreement on the finalnterms of a revised all-share merger of thentwo companies, which would be independentnof shareholder approval of proposednretention packages for senior Xstrata officials.nCommenting on the proposed dealnon Monday, US investment bank Jefferiesnsuggested that “antitrust concerns shouldnbe limited to the European zinc market,nbut issues there can be resolved withnappropriate proposed remedies.” Shortlynafter the planned merger of the twoncompanies was announced in February,nEurofer, the European steelmakers’nfederation, said it was planning to asknthe EC to open an investigation into thenproposed deal, citing concerns over thenproposed company’s dominant positionnin the zinc and steam coal markets andnstrong position in ferrochrome production.
