While tin has by no means been immunenfrom the recent pounding that base met-nals prices have taken — the price hasndropped nearly 20% since mid-April — thenmetal’s fundamentals have emerged rela-ntively unscathed, said a Barclays Capitalnreport Thursday. “Up until the first fewntrading days in June, tin had provednremarkably resilient to the macroeconom-ic uncertainties that caused such volatilitynin other base metals prices (down onlyn2% in May, versus a 13.4% averagendecline across the rest of complex),”nBarclays said. “We believe the currentnstate of tin market fundamentals wouldnjustify a rebound higher in prices if con-ncerns about the European debt crisis andnChina policy tightening are assuaged,” itnsaid. The tin price has three things in itsnfavor going forward, the report said. Firstnand foremost, London Metal Exchangeninventories are steadily falling, with stocksndown close to 21,000 mt or 22% year-to-ndate, a trend that is expected to continue,nBarclays said. Second, tin’s physical mar-nket premiums are still firm, especially innChina, where premiums over LME havenaveraged $3,400/mt since the beginningnof May, compared with $2,400/mt innApril, “indicating robust end-demand con-nditions,” the report said. Finally, tin’s sup-nply is shrinking overall, despite new datanfrom the major tin producer Indonesianshowing the country’s refined tin exportsnrose 30% year on year in April.
