SNIPEF is calling on the Scottish Government to fund the introduction of a mental health mentor for the construction industry. Awareness of mental health has never been more important. With rising suicide rates due to lockdowns and the Covid-19 pandemic, data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that male suicides are now at their highest in two decades, with figures peaking in the 45 to 55 age category. Historically, the plumbing and heating industry is male dominated and made up of many self-employed workers. The lack of job security felt during the pandemic will have caused significant strain on the industry's mental health. SNIPEF made clear in our manifesto (which you can read on our website) that mental health in our industry was already a major issue before the pandemic and there are concerns that these issues will now have been exacerbated.
