摘要

Permafrost as structure, permafrost as a system, permafrost as a cultural construction. In her fascinating book, The Life of Permafrost, Pei-yi Chu examines the life of vechnaia merzlota, or permafrost, is largely thought of today as a physical phenomenon in the Arctic that is widely distributed 'permanently' frozen ground that is at once quite tangible as a physical feature of the Earth, but yet, remains a changeable (and thus not permanent) and abstractly imagined space-timebomb that will forever change Earth's physical climate system if/when it thaws and releases untold amounts of greenhouse gases and unknown substances, such as toxins, that have been trapped in it since prehistoric times. At least, this fantastical realist imagining of the thawing of Earth's permafrost is provided by the Chu as the backdrop for examining approximately 100 years of science history to understand how frozen ground became known as it is today.
