The French Agency for Environment and Energy Management (ADEME) has always been interested, in a general way, in the models developed to assess national cost curves corresponding to different pollution abatement levels; and, more particularly, in comparing results obtained with different methods. Since 1990, ADEME has led different studies on this topic (the last ones being presented at this workshop); it has actively participated in the work done under UN-ECE (Karlsruhe workshop, VOCs and NO_x Task Forces) and has launched different initiatives in WGAT and WGS meetings, such as the creation of a topic centre which would prepare and validate national cost curves to be included, as input data, in the integrated assessment modelling. The aim of the workshop is to review the current status of methodologies and data bases required for the techno-economical characterisation of production processes and emission abatement options and to identify further needs for a longer time-frame. These needs will concern the elaboration of cost functions for integrated assessment modelling and the determination of BATs, but also other related activities e.g. emission inventorying, emission forecasting and exchange of information related to technology transfer.
