Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are gases emitted from certain solids or liquids. Because VOCs are subject to regulation, the question, "What is a VOC?" is critical. The EPA has established a broad general definition. According to the agency, VOC means any compound of carbon, excluding carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, carbonic acid, metallic carbides or carbonates, and ammonium carbonate, which participates in atmospheric photochemical reactions. In other words, VOC compounds could add to the formation of smog.
