摘要

The production and consumption of polymeric materials are subject to all the constraints and regulations dealing with the management of primary and post-consumer plastic waste. This has encouraged the search for environmentally sound materials based on biodegradable and/or naturally occurring polymers such carbohydrates, lipids and proteins that can be composted or biode-graded, thus promoting an environment-friendly waste management system. Biopolymers have received increased attention lately due to more environmentally aware consumers, increased price of crude oil and global warming issues. This is the main reason for the organisation of a biannual series of conferences named "International Conference on Biodegradable Polymers and Sustainable Composites (BIOPOL)" devoted to the presentation of updated results on all subjects concerning these materials. One of the main points to be focused on for biopolymers is their degradation in different conditions.
