Thermal stability of poly(m-carborane-siloxane) elastomers

This paper summarises work carried out toward developing a better understanding of the thermal stability of poly(m-carborane-siloxane) elastomers. The poly(m-carborane-siloxanes) containing: di-methylsilyl units (unmodified); a mixture of di-methyl- and phenyl-silyl units (phenyl modified) were studied. These materials were synthesised utilising the ferric chloride catalysed reaction between di-chloro-di-organo-silane and di-(methoxysilyl)-m-carborane. The unmodified poly(m-carborane-siloxanes) show some evidence of crystallinity by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) but, modified versions are amorphous and elastomeric. Simultaneous thermal analysis (STA) in air shows that poly(m-carborane-siloxanes) show enhanced thermal stability relative to conventional poly(siloxane). Infra-red studies confirm the integrity of the m-carborane cage at temperatures up to 580℃. Differential thermal analysis combined with infra-red studies provide evidence of exothermic cleavage of the m-carborane moiety at elevated temperatures.
