Q I'm finally getting close to getting my 70 Chevelle back on the road with a new suspension, 700-R4, and 383ci small-block stroker. I want to upgrade the rearend gears from the stock 3.08s to something that'll throw me back in the seat when I stomp on it, but will still be good for driving a lot and cruising comfortably on the freeway for long distances. What gear ratio would be best: 3.55, 3.73, or 4.10? I'm planning on using 275/40 rear tires on 17-inch wheels. A This is actually an opportune time for this tech question, since we just finished assembling the third member assembly for the Max Effort Cougar with the rearend pros over at Currie Enterprises; we recently had to do some math of our own to figure the ideal gear ratio.
