Perhaps, John F. Kennnedy said it best: "When things are non-controversial, beautifully coordinated and all the rest, it must be because there is not much going on." I don't think we have to worry that there's not much going on in our industry these days! In fact, I think the two words that most aptly describe the state of disease management today are: Red Hot. Why is disease management red hot? Because the cost of health care for employers in this country has doubled in the past three years; because health care spending per privately insured American grew nearly four times faster than the overall economy in 2002; because health care costs in 2004 are projected to increase at a double-digit rate for the fifth year in a row; and because disease management has emerged as one of the few ways to begin to buck those trends.
