Harmonic filtering is required for 12 pulse rectifier-utilityninterface to meet IEEE 519 harmonic current limits. Passive filterntechniques employ tuned L-C filters at dominant 11th and 13th harmonicnfrequencies. However, they also require 5th and 7th tuned filters tonavoid series and parallel resonance conditions. State of the art activenfiltering solutions require high bandwidth and relatively large ratingnPWM inverters for harmonic filtering of 12 pulse rectifier loads. Thusnexisting passive and active harmonic filtering solutions are notncost-effective for high power 12 pulse rectifier loads. Dominantnharmonic active filter (DHAF) based on square-wave inverters is proposednto cost-effectively meet IEEE 519 harmonic current limits for 12 pulsenrectifier loads. The proposed DHAF system employs square-wave invertersnswitching at 5th and 7th harmonic frequencies, which are transformerncoupled in series with 11th and 13th passive filters respectively. Thensquare-wave inverters are controlled to provide `harmonic isolation'nbetween the supply and load at 5th and 7th harmonic frequencies. Thensquare-wave inverters are rated 1%-2% of the load kVA rating. Thenproposed DHAF system eliminates the need for large kVAR rated and bulkyn5th and 7th passive filters, delivers superior harmonic filteringnperformance, and provides cost-effective harmonic filtering solution.nSimulation results are given to validate the `harmonic isolation'nfeature at 5th and 7th harmonic frequencies, and also demonstratenharmonic filtering required to meet IEEE 519 harmonic current limits
