Mathematical models for a three phase three-level staticnsynchronous compensator (STATCOM) working with both fundamentalnfrequency modulation and selective harmonic elimination modulation arendescribed. The mathematical models were obtained by assuming that thenpower system and the operation of the STATCOM are on a balancednthree-phase basis. The mathematical models were simplified to obtain thenSTATCOM AC side current, the DC capacitor voltage and the ripple fornboth switching strategies. These simplified design tools were validatednusing the exact model. The resonance between the DC side capacitance andnthe coupling reactance was studied using the mathematical model and thenresonance frequency for the three-level STATCOM was obtained. Thenresonance frequency was validated against results of electromagneticncomputer simulations. Using the design tools developed and consideringnthe resonance studies, the process for selection of the size of DC sidencapacitors for a small STATCOM was demonstrated
