摘要

A successful circuit breaker needs not only a suitable interrupter design but also a suitable medium in which to form and quench the arc. SF/sub 6/ is increasingly being used in circuit breakers as an alternative to oil and air. The author discusses the implications on switching technology of SF/sub 6/ use. The author discusses current interruption concepts and then discusses the distinctive properties of SF/sub 6/. These properties have promoted the evolution of new forms of interrupters which are described by the author. The performance capabilities of the SF/sub 6/ interrupters are discussed.
