1. In contrast to the linearly elastic dynamic analysis, which failed to support the earthquake resistance of thernSayano-Shushenskaya Dam when subjected to the maximum design earthquake, the strength of the dam during the maximum seismic effect is, according to results of the nonlinear dynamic analysis, ensured by redistribution of forces, dissipation of seismic energy as the joints and cracks open and close, and slip during deformations, and by nonlinear deformation of the concrete.rn2. Restoration of the initial (prior to occurrence of the MDE) strength of the concrete in the zone of probable horizontal crack formation at elevations from 470 to 490 m, the location and dimensions of which will depend on the parameters of the earthquake and the water level in the reservoir, can be accomplished by injecting the defective concrete with modern epoxy or polymeric grouts.rn3. As a basic method of assessing earthquake resistance, the linear-spectral method, which is regulated by Construction Rule and Regulation II-7-81~*, is subjective, has a number of insurmountable drawbacks, and should be replaced by a direct dynamic method of analysis.rn4. In analyzing strong seismic effects (eight points and higher), a direct dynamic analysis should be performed with consideration of nonlinear effects.
