RWE Npower has won a battle to allow ash from its Didcot power station to be dumped in nearby lakes. Local campaigners had fought to stop the generator's plan to fill Radley Lakes with ash and had applied to the local council to give the area 'village green' status - a move that would have prevented ash dumping. A public inquiry was held in April and June 2007. However, the local council announced this month that it has refused to give village green status to the 12-hectare (30-acre) site, located between Radley and Abingdon. Councillors voted 10 to four in favour of refusing the protected status.
