Relatively mild weather for much of January cut back electricity demand and mitigated some of the impact of the Large Combustion Plant Directive and the new phase of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme. The month started off colder however and prices reacted accordingly. On January 3, baseload day-ahead prices were around the £63/MWh level with peak at nearly £80/MWh. But, as the weather warmed, demand and prices fell. For instance, on January 19, London experienced record temperatures of 13.3°c. As a result day ahead baseload power prices dropped to around the £55/MWh mark (peak hovered around the £60/MWh level). But overall temperatures were slightly up on last year. The maximum temperature in the UK until January 20 was 7.5°c - the mean was 4.9°c. The year before, the maximum temperature in January was 8.7°c and the mean was 6°c.
