Security of supply is an over-used and iil-defined phrase but generally it means keeping the lights on - either now or in the future. These days it is often casually bandied about ad nauseum by lobbyists or government officials when justifying certain controversial energy policies eg approving more coal or nuclear plant. However, at the end of last month, security of supply meant something far grittier. Following the loss of two large plant on the system within minutes, National Grid's staff spent a hair-raising afternoon trying to maintain electricity supplies to all customers (see story page 30). They did not quite manage it and some power cuts were automatically forced on consumers during the day.
