Scottish and Southern Energy has been granted an extension by the Environment Agency to raise limits to running times imposed on its 1,960 MW Fiddler's Ferry and 1,955 MW Ferrybridge coal-fired power plants. Under an agreement with the agency aimed at controlling nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide emissions, operating time at the plants had been limited to 1,397 hours from January 1 to October 15. However, according to a notice on the Environment Agency's website, this has now been extended to 1,720 hours until November 30. Some coal-fired plants, including Fiddler's Ferry and Ferrybridge, had operating hours limited after failing to install equipment to cut emissions before legislation imposed by the EU's Large Combustion Plant Directive. SSE currently expects to complete the installations by the end of 2008.
