UK electricity generated by both nuclear and gas plant decreased in the second quarter of 2008 compared with the same period of 2007 while that of coal increased, according to the latest government data. Electricity generated from nuclear declined 19.3% year-on-year to 11.08 TWh while gas also fell 4% to 41.59 TWh. Electricity from coal rose 9.1% to 26.36 TWh. Nuclear's declining proportion of UK generation is the result of ongoing outages at two of British Energy's eight nuclear power stations. British Energy is also extending maintenance at other plants. Higher gas prices have meant that coal is currently the marginal baseload fuel for electricity generation. The data was published in the latest edition of Energy Trends.
