Gas-fired power station problems, high wholesale gas costs and delays in installing Flue Gas Desulfurization kit have slashed Scottish and Southern's interim financial results - adjusted profit before tax fell 54% year on year from ￡664.7 million to ￡302.6 million. In a conference call on November 12, SSE CEO Ian Marchant said the "principal reason for that reduction has been that we have had to deal with very, very high wholesale prices - particular over the summer months". He said the SSE had delayed passing on the increases to its retail customers. And he acknowledged that the availability of some of SSE's gas-fired power stations had been 'disappointing' and that the Installation of FGD at its coal stations had had an impact.
