Irish utility ESB International has taken a stake in a planned 860-MW CCGT at Carrington, Manchester as part of a ￡3.2 billion plan to bolster its presence in the British power market. On November 21, ESBI announced that it had taken a 85% stake in Bridestones Power - the company that has progressed the scheme - for an undisclosed sum. Gazprom and Statkraft were rumoured to be among other bidders for the stake. The project, which has a Power UK Project Progress Factor of 6.5 (see issue 175 for further explanation), already has Section 14 and 36 consents as well as gas pipeline anc transmission agreements (the latter starts in 2011/12). ESBI says that the plant will be operational by the end of 2013. ESBI is already a 50% shareholder in Marchwood Power, a 842MW gas-fired power station under construction near Southampton (in which Scottish and Southern Energy has a 50% stake).
