National Grid has predicted a 500 MW reduction in peak electricity demand this winter, saying the deepening downturn in the economy has resulted in less demand for power from industrial users. NG slashed its forecasts for this winter's normal weather peak demand from 58.9 GW to 58.4 GW, which helped to ease supply margins and eradicate previous concerns over possible electricity blackouts this winter. "Over recent years our forecasts have predicted a downward trend in electricity demand because of increased energy efficiency, response to higher fuel prices and increases in local electricity generation," National Grid network operations director Chris Train said in a statement.
